Does your little explorer enjoy learning vocabulary and grammar? Do they always have fun?
At Wild About Outdoors, we believe that learning should be active, engaging, and dynamic. One of our favourite tools for fostering creativity and enhancing literacy skills is the TTS Super Sentence Tub (no, I don't work for TTS resources, perhaps I should?) . I just love this vocabulary tub.
It's colourful. It's fun. Do I need to say more?
This versatile set of 117 foam pieces opens up a world of educational opportunities, especially when combined with the great outdoors. Here are some exciting activities we use with our Nature Explorers to make the most of the Super Sentence Tub:
1. Sentence Darts
Use our giant dartboard alongside the foam pieces (we used the Home Bargain ones!). Children throw a dart, and wherever it lands, they must use that word in a sentence. This game combines physical activity with sentence construction.
2. Sentence Scavenger Hunt
Children search the garden or park for hidden foam words and punctuation marks. Once they find all the pieces, they come together to create funny, imaginative sentences.
3. Nature-Inspired Story Building
Using this Super Sentence Tub, kids sit in a circle and take turns picking a word to create a story. Each new word or sentence must incorporate elements they see around them, such as trees, flowers, or wildlife.
4. Outdoor Poetry Slam
Encourage budding poets to use the foam words to compose short poems inspired by nature. They can then perform their creations in a poetry slam, adding a performative and fun element to writing.
5. Sentence Building Relay Race
Divide the children into teams. Place the foam pieces at one end of the garden and have the kids run to collect a piece, bring it back, and collaboratively build sentences. This adds a physical and team-building aspect to literacy.
6. Giant Word Jumble
Spread the foam pieces out across a designated area. Children race to find the pieces to form complete sentences, working on their spelling and grammar skills while being active.
7. Creative Writing Dice Game
Combine the Super Sentence Tub with creative writing dice. Children roll the dice to get a prompt, then use the foam words to construct sentences or short stories based on the prompt, fostering creativity and critical thinking.
8. Outdoor Grammar Games
Create games focused on different parts of speech using the foam words. For example, a game where children find and categorise nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs scattered around the garden.
9. Potion Station Sentences
At our potion station, children mix up "magic potions" and then use the foam words to write spells or instructions. This imaginative play enhances vocabulary and storytelling skills.
10. Escape Room Challenges
Incorporate the foam pieces into escape room puzzles, where children must solve clues and use the words to unlock the next stage of the adventure. This promotes problem-solving and teamwork.
These activities not only make learning fun but also help children develop important literacy skills in an engaging and interactive environment. At Wild About Outdoors, we are committed to blending education with adventure, ensuring that every child enjoys a balanced and enriching experience.
